Mountain‑Top Moments: Five Things Every Season of Preparation Requires

I’ve been reflecting on how often we find ourselves in a season of preparation. Just as we overcome one challenge, something new emerges that requires fresh readiness.

Closer to home, I’m preparing for my son’s teenage years, in fact, some days it feels like I’m already there. At work, structural changes are unfolding, and we’re preparing for a new operating model. Life is constantly filled with change, but that is the nature of a journey: it invites transformation.

Change in how we think.

Change in our outlook.

Change in our desires and motives.

And with every season of preparation, certain elements become essential. Here are five I believe we must be mindful of:

1. New Agreements

Change often introduces a new normal, a new way of being, a new operating model, a new set of expectations. These agreements may be written, verbal, or implied. Preparation gives us space to assess whether we can align with the new terms and conditions.

My son’s transition from primary to secondary school required new agreements, new expectations, and a new understanding. The same is true when starting a new job, entering marriage, or becoming a parent. Every new season comes with its own rules of engagement.

2. Identity Transformation

Before anything shifts externally, something must shift internally. Preparation affirms our posture, strengthens our thinking, and aligns our core identity with the place or role we are stepping into. Identity is universal, yet deeply personal and preparation shapes it.

3. Communal Blessing

No one prepares alone. In seasons of preparation, we seek community, mentors, guides, elders, peers. The tribe sustains us. Leaders need counsel, parents need wisdom, children need guidance. The right community helps you rise and stabilises you through transition.

4. Renewal

Every new season requires a renewed mind. Preparation is the time to filter motives, refine desires, and offload baggage that won’t serve the next chapter. New territory demands a new mindset. Renewal clears space for clarity, focus, and alignment.

5. Economic and Social Significance

Most opportunities come with a prize - social, economic, or developmental. Preparation clarifies your vision so you can fully utilise new networks, resources, and connections. Every transformational journey produces external evidence; preparation ensures you’re ready to steward it well.

We are all preparing for something, consciously or unconsciously.

And each season teaches us something about who we are becoming.

What are you noticing in your current season of preparation?
