Celebrate your milestones

Mountain top moments: Celebrate your milestones.

Celebrating milestones isn’t something I’ve always been good at.

In truth, I’m still learning how to do it well. My natural tendency has been to gloss over major achievements, not wanting to draw too much attention. But here’s something the journey is teaching me:

Blow your horn

Blow it because no one is going to get out of their car in the middle of traffic and blow it for you. We are all on a journey that is laced with traffic jambs, misdirection, roadblocks and faulty headlights - sometimes conditions are foggy, wet or sun scorched - so when we navigate all of that and make it to a meaningful milestone or landmark on the journey we should celebrate.

We should put a stake in the ground and say, "I made it this far", "I walked this road". Its not that people don't want to celebrate with you its that they may not know they ought to.

Perhaps it’s also true that many of us don’t know when to blow our horn simply because we haven’t taken time to recognise the milestones along the journey. We haven’t paused to map out the segments, the phases, the parts that make up the whole. And I understand this deeply — sometimes you have no idea what you’ve been dropped into; sometimes you start with clarity but lose your way; and sometimes you simply never considered the structure of the journey before stepping onto the road.

Every scenario calls for thoughtful consideration.

Every journey deserves intentional segmentation.

Every milestone needs its moment.

Because without recognising the parts, we miss the progress. And without acknowledging the progress, we forget to celebrate.

While on our hike up Scafell Pike, our guide earmarked a few breaks which broke up our journey into four parts. Each quarter was a break, a pause and a small celebration. With every break we got closer to the top. Beyond the laughter and good banter, those milestones were powerful:- A reminder that we were making real progress- A deterrent from turning back- A push to keep going.

It made me reflect on how often we approach our own personal projects or goals the wrong way. How often we try to swallow the whole thing at once instead of breaking it into meaningful, celebratory steps. It reminded me to savour the moment like a fine wine tasting experience acknowledging the maturing and strenghtening that had taken place.

So let me ask you: What project are you working on today? Have you broken it down enough — or are you trying to take it all in one go?

A life journey needs perspective on its milestones. If for nothing else, just so you can blow your horn when you get there 😊
